If a calculation we made causes an IRS or state penalty or interest charge, we pay the penalty and the interest. Not a credit toward next year — the actual amount. The engine is deterministic and every table is pinned by a test to a hand-worked example, which is why we can afford to say this.
We compute the standard deduction and itemised deductions every single time, test every credit your answers qualify you for, and show you the deductions you haven't claimed with what each is worth at your marginal rate. If another provider gets you a larger refund on the same facts, we refund what you paid us.
Your tier is set by the topics you tick on the first screen and it does not move. If a later answer would have needed a higher tier, you keep the price you were quoted. No upgrade prompt is ever going to appear between you and your finished return.
The free tier includes your state return, e-filing and refund tracking. There is no point in the flow where a free return turns out to cost money.
Ask and we export everything you've given us in a readable format, or delete it entirely, within 30 days. Your documents are yours; we're holding them for you, not collecting them.
Expert review is optional and it is $79 — a licensed preparer reads the return line by line, signs off, and answers your questions. It is never required, and we will not make you feel like it is.
